New Store Coming to Newhalen

On February 1, 2022 the Planning Commission for the Lake and Peninsula Borough reviewed a development permit at an online meeting. The permit was from the Newhalen Tribal Council to build a store on an existing lot. Newhalen currently does not have a store and residents shop in Iliamna. Joanne Wassillie, Tribal Administrator, said the store will sell groceries and sundries. Eventually, she said, they would like to sell fuel, but that will be another phase of the project.
