The village of Chignik (the second oldest commercial fishery in Alaska) requested assistance from then US Senate Territorial Delegate Bob Bartlett in roughly 1955 for a small boat harbor. The original costs for boat harbor was unknown. However, upon completion in 2011, the COE engineers estimates the cost of engineering, legal expenses, break water system, entrance channel and turn basin at roughly $25 million. This include roughly a $2-3 million contribution from the city and borough. Additionally, the city, LPB and State financed ($3.25 million) inner harbor improvements such as floats, with floats/fingers and pilings for over 45 local and non-local vessels. The harbor provides water and electrical services. The next harbor improvement is expected to be a 70-100 ton boat haul-out system.
