Description: The dock was originally built in 1983. It was constructed of steel framework with corrugated aluminum panels forming a series of bins that were filled with gravel. The structure, formed in a Tee shape, was developed and sold as a package system by a manufacturing company that advertises the product as a “bin wall” system and represented that the system is designed for use in marine environments. The dock was approximately 28 years old and was in a significant state of disrepair, which limits its original intended use as a mooring location for fishing vessels. Each year, weather damage to the dock structure continued to increase as several of bins that hold gravel were partially destroyed and lost the gravel infill or destroyed entirely. As a result of the lost fill, the concrete cap near the face of the dock settled and was unsafe for pedestrian access. Waves continued to wash up over the dock and erode the fill from within the bin structure and from behind them. For many years, the facility was only used as a breakwater for small vessels to moor behind for protection from wind and waves.
Phase one began with the removal of the remaining old dock gravel, metal material and concrete. To meet the current lake barging needs, concrete blocks were installed to create a useable and safe barge landing adjacent to the old dock. Owner: Lake and Peninsula Borough.
